Candis Hoey
Hairstylist, Victoria, BC
Core Desired Feelings: Grace. Generosity. Intention.

Danielle LaPorte
Writer/Speaker. Vancouver, BC
Core Desired Feelings: Golden. Union. Shakti. Joy. Truth.

1. So, like, what do you most love about me?

Danielle: You laugh at all my jokes. Is that too self-centered? Let me think of something that’s about YOU. Oh I know . . . YOU get ME great gifts, and when I come over, you always get that cheese that I like.
Candis: You overlook my shortcomings and see the best parts of me; I love your deep desire to find the sweet spot in every person.
D: Well now I feel like I should have said something deeper about you. Let’s get deep now.

2. What was my worst fashion phase?

C: It’s a toss-up. Your early Vancouver days: Acrylic nails, yellow boots, that orange leather jacket with shoulder pads. Or the Seattle phase: Home highlighting kit–done in a chunking technique to create a bird-like effect.
D: You: The Ramones concert. Circa ‘95. You had a pixie cut died grey (how was that even chemically possible?) with a daisy-patterned short jumpsuit. And black, ripped stockings. It was even too much for Joey Ramone.

3. You don’t know . . .

C: How relieved I am that we have the same ruling planet! Being that in sync is so comforting.
D: How much I need you. “Desperately” would be accurate. Or, how much of a true beauty you are.

4. You’re the best in the world at . . .

D: Healing people by making things beautiful for them. You’re also incredibly optimistic–even tho’ I don’t think you see yourself as that way, but you are.
C: Creating a space & asking the right questions.

MUST USE 1433_0025. Best laugh . . .

C & D: The $1.99 face mask!!!!!
D: There are so many legendary laughs. No one will get them tho’, so let’s move on.

6. If it weren’t for you . . .

C: I would still be lying about my age, embellishing stories, and trying to be someone I am not.
D: I’d be on meds.

7. When you die . . .

C: We both have always known that I am going first. So come and find me. I will have the place ready for you. Pillows fluffed, tea on. I will show you around, and I will be so happy to be back together.
D: I’m going to make sure they burn incense and play some Melody Gardot at your funeral. And we’re taking you out in a pickup truck with a wreath of lavender on the grill. I’ve got the whole thing planned.

1433_0058. Do you remember the time . . .

D: We drove eight hours to Texas for pizza and then came straight back?
C: We decided to be vegetarians and went out for a farewell burger?
D: You washed my kitchen floors–on your knees–after the baby came?
C: We skipped work and got our first tattoos from the guy with the Chihuahua and the Harley?
D: You so would have gone home with him.
C: Damn straight.

1433_0049. What’s the best advice I ever gave you?

C: Never wear houndstooth. And – eat one more doughnut, then . . . go green! We don’t judge each other. We just roll with it. That’s why it’s so awesome.
D: You told me to stay, when it was good to stay. Go, when it was good to go. You always know what’s best for my heart–and that what’s best has cycles.
C: And you always tell me to BUY THE CASHMERE.
D: True. And use the whole tub of feta for the Greek salad. It’s all about the cheese.
C: Allll about the cheese.

10. The world needs to know that . . .

C: Your heart drives all that you do.
D: a) Your mother didn’t know how to spell “Candace” when you were born, so that’s why you’re “Candis.” Ten points for you-neek-ness! b) You’re deeply accepting of how things are. Which would make you pretty close to enlightened in my book.

Dear God, help me out with the basics, would you-Danielle-LaPorte

Dear God, help me out with the basics, would you?

Show me how to love the ones that are like, really hard to love. The misogynists and boundary bullies, the fake leaders and land-rapers. Actually, for the sake of efficiency, just show me how to love the most greedy. That should cover it. (But while we’re at it, help me out with the Mean Girls, ‘cause like, whoa.)

How to hone your truth detector.

There’s so much faking it to make it and deception happening in every sector of life — from politics to self-improvement. So how can we hone our truth detectors?

Women, boundaries, and spirituality. The perfect storm.

In my experience, boundary obliviousness is part of the initiation into wholeness. I don’t think you have to warrior your whole life for it, but it’s a passage to self-agency that most women seem to have to go through. Boundaries help us expand our consciousness.
