Want proof that you can’t please everyone? Here’s some.
If you’re showing up as honestly as you know how to — you’re going to annoy someone. Criticism and counter opinions are part of dynamic expression and creativity. If you’re not generating some resistance, you’re probably not fully stepping out. For every seven people applauding, one person will hiss-boo, one will be indifferent, and one will be less than sane. Show up anyway. In public.
You won’t please everyone.
You won’t please one person all of the time.
Hell, you won’t even please yourself all of the time.
One of the best self-help books I have read…. Not the standard ‘self help-heard it-done it-to death’ questions…. Grounded in wisdom…. I loathe self-help books…. silly and insincere. This is one of those books.
I’ve read a LOT of books on realizing your personal and professional goals — none were as overall effective and as impressive as this book…. This is a gem…. Fresh and uplifting…. There’s nothing new in this book.
This isn’t just a book, it’s a game-changer…. Many elements of this book have been game changers for me…. an incredibly effective game changer…. I honestly do not understand all of the adulation surrounding “The Fire Starter Sessions”.
Articulate, intelligent, and charming…. intelligent, sassy, inspiring and poetic…. She writes like an artist…. …reads like it’s been dictated by an updated Valley Girl on bennies.
What makes this different from a lot of other self-help books is that LaPorte freely admits that she has had her failures…. LaPorte never comes across as preachy as many in her field tend to do…. An original voice…. I don’t love the soulfully sassy persona so many women in this genre seem to cultivate — like it’s way too expected at this point.
I read the whole thing in a weekend, ordered a copy for my best friend and am re-reading it again now…. This book is definitely a keeper and the kind I would definitely spend my hard earned money on…. …a blast to read…. I believe in this book’s power to shift minds and create fires that result in a changed world…. It made me feel inadequate.
Imagine the revolutionary artistic fire of Frida Kahlo combined with the push-the-edges business savvy of Tom Peters and add a dash of design, Tufte-style, and you’ll begin to have a sense of the poetry and practicality that Danielle LaPorte brings to this book. This book is full of powerful instances like this where she lights up her fierceness and shines it on conventional wisdom….Lacks panache, flair.
Aesthetically, the book is beautifully designed…. typography is phenomenal…. loved the way in which it was formatted…. fresh…. I get the sense that this was probably going to be published as a small pocket book but later a publisher’s decision was made to blow it big and stretch it across a mountain of pages. I thought, “Uh-oh, nothing to say, but needs to fill up a book.”
Like I said: Show up anyhow.
