what’s one dumb thing that you used to believe in?

I used to buy into the whole concept of The One. You know…The One…your loverly soulmate. All perfectly cut to fit your mold. In sync with your values, kisses like a lover should kiss, finishes your sentences, can read your mind with such accuracy that they know exactly what to say, what to get you for your birthday, when to tip toe or sweep you off your feet. Lifetimes together. Riding the same brainwaves. Wants what you want. Harmonious hot perfection. DESTINY. The ONLY one for you. Just…one.

That’s what the 80′s in the New Age got ya: predeterministic thinking that is dangerously narrow — doesn’t leave much room for mystery (maybe The One isn’t who you thought they’d be), and limits your options (what if there’s more than just one?)

What I now know to be true: The One Is the One because you say they are. It’s the partner you choose, the partner you declare sacred, the partner to whom you vow — in your own way — to love like they’re the only One.

it’s not too late to be … you. (and why I changed my site name).

For nearly four years, this town was called WhiteHotTruth.com. And now it’s DanielleLaPorte. Dot com.

The change was two parts soul impulse, one part logic. I was talking with the CEO of a major publisher. “So why are you WhiteHotTruth.com?” he asked, slight southern drawl n’ all. I had lots of reasons. “I wanted to write a book called White Hot Truth so that was the impetus, and, it’s a provocative name. Besides…it’s too late now.” Shrugged my shoulders. Too late. End of conversation. Then this reply from Mr. CEO:

“It’s not too late to be just … be you.”

And that was it. Switch, flipped. I redesigned my masthead that night.

We talked about the power of being the straight up “name” and not the package. But here’s the biz thing: it’s really fucking risky to change your business and domain name when you’ve got plenty of subscribers, and! when you’re rolling out a book campaign for what you hope will be a bestseller. My “business” only grows if new people hear about me. Hundreds of thousands of them. “WhiteHotTruth” at least gets someone curious enough to click. What does “DanielleLaPorte” “say”? Nothing.

But increasingly, I’m less drawn to refining my strategic plans, and more drawn to refining my energy. Less brawn, more juju.

To operate from a more luminous place, you need to shed skin, cut gimmicks lose, and smash some otherwise safe containers. With less persona in the lead, you can access more light. And light is the most efficient force in the universe.

I needed some transition support. So I called on my troop of soul savvy sisters and misters. “911. Changing name. Discuss.” Dyana, Franz, Navjit, Hiro, Angie, Kris, Marie…were a unanimous YES! Do it! We’ve been waiting for this.

And then, “Soul Caller”, Amy Oscar, poured out some wisdom in a late night email. She threw some tarot cards and did what she does (like, professionally): seered into the situation. I’m going to impose a title on this missive, because it’s it’s own dose of prescriptive wisdom for all of us, about the call to our true name — literally for some of us, metaphysically for all of us. I hope it rings a bell in your soul:

Heed the impulse to expand. Embrace the logic of letting go.

By releasing the old name, you are releasing any residue of the old self still enslaved in the ego — and to lean fully into the true, natural self. The work that you are doing is deeper and richer; you’re vibrating your work up from the soul into form; where some people do just the opposite; using form to attempt to look soulful.

You will not lose your tribe — and you will not lose your form; will not dissolve. But you will shift, casting off what you are not; what you no longer need, in order to emerge from beneath it (and here is that sense of residue again. What will dissolve is the residue of the past idea of the self; and with it the story that there is anything to prove.) Your vibration is shifting to a higher frequency; the question of changing the name arises out of that. It’s a stirring inside of you that already knows the answer before it’s asked the question.

This is the ascension process; a process that each of us is meeting in our own way. Using your true name, your own name will help ground you as you move quickly through these next few stages of unfolding, of becoming more and more aligned with the ‘true name’ that lives deep within.

Out of this alignment, you build the container that you need to hold all of the light force that’s gushing through you right now – energy that will only increase as the world turns its gaze in your direction.

Essentially: the reading says that the ‘brand’ is keeping you smaller than your own true name. This is a call to risk opening to just how big and wide your true self is; and to use that name which can contain all other names — including the “I Am” self, your chip of the Divine.

Beyond the basics of food, shelter, and health, what do you need money for? Does beauty matter? Does comfort matter? Does stability have great meaning for you, or the capacity to travel the world? If you say it matters to you, then it matters. And what matters varies wildly from person to person.

You are the economist of what matters to you.

Luxury might be a necessity for your peace of mind. Tithing may be part of your basics. Freedom could mean stock options and a company expense account, or it could be the liberty to design your own day, every day. Culture could be owning a Francesco Clemente portrait, or having enough money after you pay bills to buy a round at the pub. You could use your disposable income to shop organic or fund an expedition to Everest.

When you establish your purpose for money, you have a rudder to help guide your purchases, investments, donations, savings—all the things that you do with money. You also motivate yourself to go get what you want the most.

Tucked into my planner is a tattered and love-worn list titled “My Purpose for Money.” When I wrote it I was living hand to mouth, had just been rejected by an art school, and was officially lost — it was the perfect time to steady my aim. Every single word in my purpose list is intentional and prayer soaked. And because of that, the list has just as much relevance ten years later. I’m a ways from fulfilling my purpose for money, but I’m on the right path.

Travel with Scott, our child, friends and family, widely and freely.
Create and invest in socially responsible ventures.

Time and luxury space in Santa Fe (and elsewhere . . .)
Buy beautiful art.

Do you want to make a million bucks a year? Why? For what? Do you really need it to do what you want to do and be who you want to be this lifetime, or do you need more? How much will be enough if you’ve reached your lifestyle goals? And who really needs “more than enough”?

Conscious wealth has greater value.

Charlie Rose. Oprah. Barbara Walters. For Canadian props, I’m adding George Strombopoulous and Jian Gomeshi to the list. Deft, smooth and penetrating interviewers. Here’s a few reasons why they get the goods.

12 tips for getting a meaningful interview

1. Give an intro that makes your interviewee sound like a rock star. For these reasons: you want to get your audience excited, you want to prime their mind for a meaningful experience. You want to show immediate respect for your subject. You may not adore them, but you need to respect them. And you want to lift the energy UP from the get go. So rave as sincerely as you can.

2. Keep the intro to your guest pointed and short. Ramble off their most impressive accomplishments — the facts, and give a few words about how your perceive them — emotional connection, and then get down to business. The audience is waiting to hear from your guest, not to hear you talking about talking to your guest.

3. Go for punctuated moments, not flow. This is one of the biggest errors that interviewers make: they try to make a conversation flow from topic to topic. What happens is that in an attempt to be smooth, the interview goes flat. Questions can be unrelated, quirky, unguarded. Change directions. Think: “staccato”, or “fun house tour”. You have a very short time to cover a lot of territory so it’s okay if it feels like more of a sprint than a stroll.

4. Do NOT ask this, the most dreaded question of all interviewees: “So tell me how you got to where you are?” If you watch people get asked this question, you can see them sigh heavily before they attempt to sift through the salient highlights of their entire life. What the interviewee wants to say is, “Are you kidding? I’m 40 years old, how’d I get here? Read my bio.” Instead, if they’re polite, they’ll regurge the key moments that earned them their authority. Either way, it’s painful.

5. Study — and refer to — other interviews they’ve given. Oprah is especially good at saying, “I read that you… Is that true?” Bringing other interview content into the conversation does a few things: it makes it clear that you care enough to do your homework. It gives you content. It helps flesh out the character of your subject.

6. Listen, really listen. This is difficult to do because you want to be sure you know what the next question is. But presence will take you where you need to go. In the event that you do go blank…

7. Always have a backup Q that you can toss in whimsically if things go sideways.

8. Don’t talk about yourself very much (we’re focused on the guest,) but do have an opinion (we want to trust you).

9. Assume that nobody has ever heard of your guest, no matter how known you think they are, and sprinkle in factoids and references “So when you wrote your last book, The Tale of …”

10. This question often cracks things wide open (or clams ‘em up): “How did you feel when…“

11. Run the interview. You’re the track, your guest is the train. The stronger the container you provide for your interviewee, the more they’ll pour into it.

12. Treat them like they’re world famous, even if they aren’t… yet. Respect. Gratitude. Best wishes.

Feelings are magnetic. So it goes that if you generate certain feelings — and you have the power to create any feeling you desire — then you increase the power of your emotional magnetism. But we need to limber up, loosen the images and adjectives encrusted on our goals and most-desired states. It helps to get poetic, lyrical, and abstract. Go there with me.

I want my day to feel like jazz.
I want kissing to feel like eating an orange off the tree from Tuscany.
I want my next success to feel like Adele must feel with her latest album.
I want my body to feel like a Jaguar in a new open field.
I want smiling to feel like mangoes.
I want my friendships to feel like sandalwood oil, and bowls of popcorn, and hand-knit, with Vodka mixers, served up in a red tent.
I want my nervous system to feel like The Buddha must have felt when he discovered The Middle Way.
