When you’re in a painful place you’ll try to climb the walls to get away from it. You want it over with. But there are some things you need to do first.
Here what to do when things suck.
1. When you’re feeling far from your soul zone and something shitty is happening … fully accept it. I know, I know. Believe me, I know. This could sound naïvely flaky and downright impossible. It usually is. And yet! This counsel is at the heart of most Eastern mysticism. Don’t deny what’s real—face it.
2. When you’re not feeling the way you want, you can say this: “I’m really looking forward to feeling . . . ” Even if you’re totally steamed or really discouraged, just uttering positive, future-focused words can create a shift.
3. First, of course, you need to how you want to feel helps you steer clear of criticism and complaining about yourself or other people.
4. When things don’t go the way you want them to, you can say to yourself, “Well, at least I’m even clearer about how I want to feel now.” Or perhaps all you can eke out is, “Maybe I’ll be grateful for this someday.” That’s a step in the right direction.
