She’s 7×7 feet. Acrylic, oil stick, sweat. A story of freedom that wants to be completed.
I’m in NYC a lot for business. The last time I went to The Met, I ran it in 40 minutes because I had a plane to catch.
I’m in LA even more — it’s a quick direct flight, and I’ve fallen in love with Venice Beach. My last visit was meant for friends and Paolo Nutini. Then I crammed in a bunch of filming and came home spent. Again. (And, we had to scrap a bunch of the footage anyway. I got the message, universe.)
I’m taking 2015 off of business travel. Deeeeclared! I’ve got two gigs that I’m doing (see below) and the rest… I’m only only getting on airplanes for pure love and margaritas. (I’m game for a lotta of flights for those very right reasons.) I love travel. I have a hotel fetish. I adore my work. It’s nice to be invited. The invites are getting juicier. So why not stay in the race and put a little more muscle in my hustle? Because… I’m not a racer. I’m a maker. And you can’t race your make.
CREATIVITY. CADENCE. CORE DESIRED FEELINGS. What it takes to make good stuff in the world.
: Notice when your dream has come true.
If you’re addicted to accomplishing things, you might miss the fact that you’ve actually accomplished something pretty awesome. Not too long ago it was just me and my Word Press password. Now it’s me + a team of ten. I arrived at the place I saw. Now I’m going to close my eyes so I can see what’s next.
: Wide open space = deeper creativity.
My artsy spirit animal is a Horse: She likes to be free; when she runs, she RUNS; and when she’s not running, she is grazing. I’ve been executing a lot this year+ and that’s been a satisfying rush. But I’ll go lame if I keep hauling ass. You’ve got to get off the path to tap the joy of discovery. Burn your plans and take a hard right.
: Stay seven steps ahead of your craft and your crew.
What you see launching D’Land right now is Desire Map Licensing. This is our Superbowl. The stadium is filling up. We have a playbook. We’re PUMPED.
And… in between plays, while I’m walking Christopher Starbeam there’s a book whispering one-liners to me. She’s called The Manifesto of Encouragement and she is moving toward the tip of my tongue. I’ve got four more books behind her. And a music project (squeee!) And, ten times a day, I walk by a huge canvas hanging in my back room that is half painted. She wants another white wash. She wants to be signed, and mounted, and loved in the light. (Who doesn’t?)
You probably have notebooks of ideas. You may have ideas you haven’t told anyone about. There are ideas that the cosmos is waiting to tell YOU about it. Stop. Shhh. Did you hear that? It’s your next big idea. Stay still long enough and you’ll hear how to make it happen.
: When faced with a choice between a deadline and a friend, almost always choose the friend.
Because life is love and that’s that.
Those little things you say yes to today will pull on you tomorrow. Possibilities are looking for the cracks in your to-do list in order to show up.
: When you start bitching about doing what it takes to do the very basics of your job, then it’s time to take a break.
Clue: Burn your plans and take a hard right.
: Do what you want to do. It’s YOUR life. Your LIFE.
It’s your LIFE.
: Honour your body and it will help you be even more creative.
It took me two years to notice that when I travelled for work, my lungs acted up (it’s a Gemini thing.) But travelling for pleasure = happy lungs and boundless energy. Noted.
: Boundaries get tested. Expect it. That’s why they’re “boundaries” and not open doors.
Once I decided “no mo’ biz gigs in 2015,” a big invite from a dear friend came my way. And another. And then one more. Which brings me to…
: Focus. It hurts so good.
If focusing was easy, everyone would being doing it.
Coming soon, I’m going to walk slowly through art galleries. I’m going to wear the same jeans for three months and write my next book. I’m going to pack light and run into the arms of my future.
