SESSION 10: Make Stuff That Feels Good to Make

When does your muse visit you?

Call it what you want: the zone, the flow, the magical gap, the illuminating silence . . . there is a place in space and time where we tend to think and feel most clearly. And in that place is where muses love to get your Creative Genius all fired up.

Certain conditions are more optimal for some people’s muses than others: interaction, movement, nature, and contemplation. The trick is to find out what your muse loves the most and set the stage for her to enter. (Or him. Maybe your muse is of the male persuasion. I don’t want to get any nasty letters from the Union of Muses for discrimination.)

What business are you really in?

You may be an event planner who is really in the business of stress management or trend spotting. Some doctors are more in the business of data dispensing than caretaking. The best hairstylists I know are actually in the healing and empowerment industry, and some of the best receptionists are in the same business as bodyguards— they’re protective ninjas. Some project managers exist to motivate. Yoga studios are community builders. Waiters sell charm, residential real-estate agents sell comfort, and we all know that bartenders are really in the therapy business.

Your “real business” is your soul speciality, your Creative Genius. And it’s what we’d all line up to get from you.
