5 Q’s for your deeper Year In Review

Last year I sat in a pub in Ojai, while Steph pushed me to do a rapid-fire reflection on the closing year. She gave me a few minutes to write out my answers to these questions:

What didn’t work?
What did work?
What were the highlights?

And then: What does the new year look like if it’s full of what works?
Bonus Q: What do your highlights say about you?

Holy instant pattern recognition. If you stay out of your head and ask from the heart, CLARITY can happen like THAT. Snap.

Here’s how it rolled out for me:

What didn’t work… The situations need to stay private but the learning is the same as it always is: Any endeavour where I override the benefit of my serious doubt is disastrous. Ignoring that weighed down feeling, giving way more than my fair share for the sake of so called harmony… disaster. It’s one of those classic, “Are you fucking kidding me?” types of lessons, because you have to get hammered by it more than once. Eventually you realize that being “spiritual” or running a “conscious” business doesn’t mean that you have to put up with people’s “unconscious” behaviour.

Excessive-tolerance is so 2016. Self respect is all in for 2017.

What
did work…
: Gigs. It really paid for me to take a year off of speaking, because my new gigs have been richer. I got softer in the right parts and fiercer on the right subjects, and I’m bringing it.
: Tofino. LA. Vancouver. All of my writing retreats were ace. Confirmed: more blocks of protected time = mo’ better creativity. Essential.
: NYC + LA. Magic always happens. Be there.
: Extended travel with The Kid: longer adventures make for deeper learning, and more snort laughing.

Highlights…
: Wrote the book! (launches in May 2017).
: Reading To Kill A Mockingbird in a park in Paris.
: Brunch with Oprah was…brunch with OPRAHHH!
: Pilgrimage to shrine of Mary Magdalene in St. Baume.
: One of the women on Team D fell madly in love.
: Vic stepped in as President of Team D.
: H nailed Blackbird on guitar.
: Healed my lungs. Free at last!
: Cleared out half of my wardrobe.
: Partnering with Heidi.
: That thing that happened that one night.
: Ironman Kona, cheering on Steph.
: Founded the publishing company. It’s game on.
: The light! Deepened my practice. My spirituality is no longer an experiment. I understand devotion in new ways.

And then… what does the new year look like, full of more of what works…very, very generally…
: Excessive tolerance is OUT. Equal collaborations always and forever.
: Gimme the mic.
: Uninterrupted creative time blocks—this is going to require some significant re-structuring. I’m up for it.
: Airplanes are my friends.
: Relationships are everything.
: More clean, more deep, more Light. All for Love. Devoted.

Holidaze, holy days, and lightening it all up.

Holidaze, holy days, and lightening it all up.

Ah, the holidays. Togetherness, twinkly lights, and… mass overconsumption, obligation, and so many opportunities for distraction. Most of us approach distraction as a time management issue—how we wrangle our to-do lists and goals.

Hey Fire Starter People

Burn your journals. Maybe. Danielle LaPorte

Burn your journals. Maybe. Either way, here’s some inspiration on letting go.

I burned about 20 years of journals. Pages and pages of gut-red poetry and angst; cosmic gorgeousness and tender prayers; lists of wants, boyfriends (a loose term), and favourite perfumes. With every page I fed into the fireplace, I smiled. Thank you. Goodbye. Hellohhh here & now…

Danielle LaPorte How our business gives back

How our business gives back

When I started my own business, I made a decision to be public about our charitable giving. It was a practice I learned from Anita Roddick and the Canadian-based leaders (all women) of The Body Shop. The Body Shop was my first job-job and it baked the concept of a triple bottom line into my happily bleeding heart. The idea of sharing this is to inspire giving through business. I think we’re all gifters at heart. The flow of allowing and aiding is our natural way of being.
